During my internship, I created a pop-up card for Old Melbourne Gaol. Each box includes a character of an inmate who used to stay in the jail. I illustrated these characters on Procreate, based on the research I've done. The characters include individuals such as Michael Crimmins, a 3-year-old boy who was arrested for being "lazy" and "untidy". Each box contains an illustration and a short description of each inmate, explaining about them on the reverse side of the illustration.
In my work with the National Trust on the Old Melbourne Gaol project, I discovered that the site represents more than just a prison. It is a historical landmark where, tragically, individuals were sometimes wrongfully treated and convicted, with the youngest inmate being merely 3 years old. This revelation inspired me to target my efforts towards the younger generation, specifically children aged 12-15 in Victoria's local primary and high schools. Driven by a profound desire to acknowledge and share the stories of those who suffered, particularly the innocent children, I set out to design a retail product. This product aims not only to educate but also to serve as a reminder of the specific individuals who were once imprisoned. The ultimate goal of this project is to make history accessible and engaging for young minds, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the historical significance of the Old Melbourne Gaol.
